Archive from Account Creation through April 24, 2011:

Hey, Cordir, nice to "see" you. :-) Tynian

  • Nice to be able to come and visit. I'm not really familiar with Wikis, but I'll see what I can't contribute... Thank you for the warm welcome! :) Cordir

Wow, lots of material! Thanks for getting all of this posted. Tynian 13:21, 15 January 2011 (MST)

  • My pleasure. Seemed a waste not to get it posted somewhere, since I've hoarded it all these years... ;) Cordir

Well, I'm not sure how much good it's doing to look through all this stuff. It just makes me sad, everyone that I knew that have moved on. I guess there's a dark side to history. Tynian 17:07, 17 January 2011 (MST)

  • I guess I look at it like this: The richness of TFC's history is something to be celebrated: whether it happened yesterday or ten years ago. Yes, many have moved on.. but still others find it, and some of our oldest players are still visiting regularly. :) And besides - this wiki is going to give me an excuse to bug some old friends and nudge them this way to update stuff. Cordir

2.x stuff

There's no easy way to find out the original creation date for a 2.x character, since we didn't start keeping track of it until 3.0. Backups from the 2.x era are lost, sadly enough. Drive space was at a premium back then. I think I may have copied some backups off to tape... only I have not been able to successfully read those tapes. The only readable backup I have found was the one right before version 3 went live, which is not helpful to your needs.Tynian

  • : Aw, drat. :( Thanks, though. :)

Quiller

Quiller was a Demigod whose character was shared out to another player, and was deleted and sitebanned in June 1995. Wizlist showed that he was evil, and immorted after Psykill and before Daliah. Tynian 15:01, 17 January 2011 (MST)

INFO PC template

Ha, I see you've noticed the INFO PC template. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. It is okay to use. Just keep in mind that I'm still refining it, so it might change some out from under you, and you might have to come back to the articles you've included it on to fix things up. Tynian 15:10, 17 January 2011 (MST)

  • Oops! *blush* Didn't realize I was jumping the gun. I'll stay aware that it may change. Thank you! Cordir

By and by, if you come across a template that has incorrect or missing information, and you have better info, feel free to edit it if you wish. The information I have is very sketchy. Tynian 15:14, 17 January 2011 (MST)

  • Will do! Most of what I put up today was what I had on hand on a USB memory stick. I'll start doing some major file-rummaging to see if I can't find more stuff. :)Cordir
  • On Info pc template, we should probably only supply information that we know. I took a peek at Khore's info, and to my way of thinking, the 'Unknown' lines don't add anything. What do you think? Tynian 15:27, 18 January 2011 (MST)
  • P.S. - I didn't mean to scare you off.
  • You didn't! :) Just taking a night off, since I got so much posted during the day. I *tend* to like the 'unknown' because it invites people to find the information - whereas, if there ISN'T a field there, they might not think to wonder about what's missing. Can the field be left blank and still have the category there, instead of the 'Unknown'? Cordir

Templates and categories

Keep in mind that only some templates should be applied directly to articles, as some templates call other templates, and aren't meant to be called directly. Templates should be categorized, so that the useful, directly applicable ones can easily be found.

Some categories are automatically added to an article by virtue of a template. For example, the 'Info pc' template adds categories based on how it is filled out. The Immortal and mortal categories are automatically added in such a way. So is the race category, if race is provided. I would suggest applying the Info pc info box to all characters, provide known information, and then preview the page. You should see some categories specified way at the bottom of the preview, without having to manually add them. Tynian

  • Wonderful! Thank you, Tynian. I'll try not to break anything!! Cordir

Other templates

If you're feeling up to it, there are two other templates that may be of interest. They aren't as refined, as I haven't applied them very often. I haven't found their shortcomings yet.

  • Template:Info area - For areas
  • Template:Info following - For followings

If you don't feel comfortable with them, no worries. Just thought I'd mention them as options. Tynian 15:45, 18 January 2011 (MST)

  • I'm not sure I'm using the templates correctly - I'm copying and pasting them from your template pages.. but if you make changes, the copy/pasted template doesn't 'update' - should it? Or am I expecting a bit much? ;) Cordir 10:11, 20 January 2011 (MST)
  • I'm not sure I follow. If you change data in an info box, the information that is displayed should also change. Oh! You mean, if I change the template itself, add/modify/remove fields, like what I removed deleted_for? Then right, that doesn't automatically update. There really wouldn't be a way for it to. One would have to go back and fix up any templates that break as a result of changes. Which is why I try to avoid changing them, else we're going to have to re-visit a lot of pages. Tynian 10:53, 20 January 2011 (MST)

Gotcha. Well, some suggestions, then? For the Info Following, adding Ordained would be good.. Cordir

  • I thought about that, and am open to it. I didn't do it out of concerns that some followings have switched OMs quite a lot, and wasn't sure how useful such a list would be. Still want me to add it? Tynian 11:50, 20 January 2011 (MST)

I would say Yes.. it's info I've been posting manually, so having it as part of the template would be helpful! Cordir

Signing talk pages and the like

  • You probably already knew this, but in case you didn't... there's a couple of shortcuts for signing your name. 3 tildes just signs your name (and talk page) and 4 tildes signs name and date. I hope this is helpful. Tynian 09:50, 20 January 2011 (MST)

I didn't know that! Thank you! (To be honest, I've been cutting and pasting the (User: Tynian|Tynian) in yours, and then typing in my name. *blush* Cordir 09:51, 20 January 2011 (MST)

  • I was afraid of that. You are far more patient than me. I have enough trouble remembering to sign, without having to remember the signature "form." Thanks again for the information dump. It's a lot to go through -- we have red links everywhere! Tynian 09:59, 20 January 2011 (MST)

I'm having an obscene amount of fun, honestly... Cordir 10:10, 20 January 2011 (MST)
